How Storm Damage Impacts Your Home
Most hail and wind damage cannot be seen from the ground. Hail can bruise shingles, break the mat, and weaken the roof system without leaving visible marks from the yard. Wind can crease shingle tabs or lift shingles in ways that are not obvious unless inspected up close. Missing shingles are usually the only type of storm damage a homeowner can see without a roof-level inspection.
Insurance coverage for storm damage is time-sensitive. Some carriers allow only 6 months to file a claim, and most require claims to be filed within 12 months of the storm. If damage is not documented within that window, coverage can be denied even if the damage is legitimate.
Undetected storm damage can reduce the value of the property and lead to long-term issues if it is not addressed within the coverage period. Our team is trained in the detection of hail and wind damage and can perform a full inspection to determine whether damage is present. We can also advise whether a claim is warranted or provide peace of mind if no damage is found.
Our Storm Damage Inspection Process
Exterior Components
Our inspection begins with collateral indicators that help confirm whether hail or wind was present at the property. We check soft metals and other surfaces that show impact or directional damage, including window screens, downspouts, gutters, metal trim, exposed AC coils, yard fixtures, and other soft metal features. These items help verify whether the storm produced conditions that can also damage shingles.
Once collateral indicators are documented, we inspect the roof itself. We look for hail bruising, mat breakage, granule displacement, creased shingle tabs, lifted shingles, and any storm-related damage to flashing, penetrations, ventilation, siding, windows, and exterior trim. Missing shingles are usually the only type of storm damage visible from the ground, but most hail and wind damage requires a roof-level inspection to identify correctly.
Interior and Attic
Inside the home, we check for signs of water intrusion. This includes attic moisture, decking damage, insulation staining, and any visible leaks or discoloration on interior ceilings or walls. If storm-related damage is found inside the home, we document it even if we are not performing those specific repairs.
All findings are documented with photos and notes for your insurance claim.
Roof Insurance Claim Checklist
Use this checklist to stay organized and protect your home during the claims process:
- Document visible damage: Take clear photos of anything you can safely see, including roof, gutters, siding, and any interior leaks or staining.
- Schedule a professional inspection: Contact a licensed roofing contractor to perform a full storm‑damage inspection and document all findings.
- Notify your insurance carrier: Open a claim and write down your claim number and adjuster’s contact information.
- We handle the claim process: Once you authorize us to proceed, we meet the adjuster, document all damage, handle supplements, and align the scope with code and manufacturer requirements.
- We handle any necessary supplements: We compare the insurance estimate to our findings and submit documentation for any missing items, code‑required upgrades, or corrections needed to complete the scope.
- Begin repairs once the scope is approved: Work starts after supplements are processed and the full scope is aligned.
- Keep copies of everything: Save photos, estimates, emails, and claim documents for your records.
